Coming to an End

It is great to know that there are only 2 weeks left until the summer, but it is hard at the same time. This is when you have to finsh up a ton assisgnments, and new ones still keep coming. Alos, you have to study for finals. The weather is finally so nice that you don't even want to do any of your work. I have had some reliefs thsi week though. i did really well on my efolio. That is such a huge weight off of my shoulders. Also, for as fun as it is, the Fitt Club's time at the YMCA is coming to an end. This will give me just a little bit more time to get everything done. Since our blogging is due today I don't know how much I will be on here, but I hope you all have a great summer!!! :)

Exercise Science Fitness

Tomorrow I am going with some other Phys. Ed. majors to run the Exercise Science fitness program. This is where the Fitt Club got its idea for our group fitness. We are playing frisbee games, and when I was looking I found some really good ones. I did not relaize though, that you can play rounders with almost anything. When I had to teach it as a lesson, we played it with a bat and ball, so it was really close to basbeall. I found a frisbee version of rounders though. It is the same, but you use the firsbee. The batter throws it rather than there being a bowler. Also, there is a coordination game that allows teams to amke wobbly throws to try and score points, while the other team can only catch with one hand. Frisbee games are great for phys. ed. classes because they require very little, if any extra equipment, and they are great to play outdoors.

Pod Cast

Our Podcasts are due today, and it feels good to have something else done in this class!!! If you get a chance, you should all listen to mine and Brandi's podcast!!! We love it! We did a test review for a health realted fitness test for students in 9th and 10th grade. Also, we used this to review Fitnessgram testing. This was a good review for us for fitness ed.. We really wanted to blog on the Pens, but it's ok because what we did turned out really well. Brandi put it on her Ipod and listens to it all the time!! HAHA!!!!

All Done!!!

What a great feeling to be done with my efolio!! It feels like such a weight has been lifted. And this week isn't that bad because of Mini Convention. The rough part about that is that I am presiding the 8 am session. That won't be too bad though. I am glad the semester is winding down. I love being at SRU, and I love my P.E. classes, but I need to be on the beach as fast as I can. It's my favorite place to be there, and I can't wait!!!!!!

E Folio

I have locked myself in my room for a few hours now, and have been doing nothign but my E-Folio. It isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I have gotten a lot more done than I would have thought, but I still have a lot more to go. I have to go to the library tonight and scan everything, and I know that will take a lot of time. I really am trying to make this really good the first time that I do it, so when Senior Sem. rolls around I won't want to redo it. I am so tired fo looking at the computer screen, but I am listening to the Spice Girls so I guess that makes it ok!!! :)

Shoulder Injury

As if scheduling wasn't hectic enough, I now have to work around a shoulder injury. I can only take classes that will be easy on my left shoulder because I am getting surery May 16th. I have always had problems with it, but I recently went to the doctor and finally got it checked out. i found out that I have too muc space in my shoulder capsule, and that my muscles and joints are hyper-extended. So, they are going to tighten my muscles and shave down my clavical bone. Also, I found out that I tore my laibrim, so they are going to have to fix that as well. I will be in a sling for 6 weeks, and will have a few months of recovery. I guess that it is just something that I am going to have to get used to.

YMCA

Again the FITT Club went to the YMCA in New Castle, and this time I felt like we really accomplished something. We started off with a getting to know you game, because there were several new students. I played the tiolet paper game with them, and I also learned a lot abou them that I didn't know. Then we played a game of volleyball, and finally everyone got off the bleachers and played. This was one of the best things I have ever seen. It has been so frustrating watching some of the students just sit there rather than being active. They were all really good at it, and we actually got a good game going. I hope that when we go again in April, we can do another activity that will once again get them all involved. It is important that we go because not only do we get the kids active, but we also talk to them about problems they may be having. I think that Career Links is 9a really great program!

Snow

When I was doing my postings on NASPE Forum I asked if anyone knwo of lessons that could be taught to students in the snow. I think that this would be a great way for students to be able to go outside and release some energy, and at the same time they are exposed to something new. I got a response from a teacher that said that she was able to teach cross country skiing in her classes, and although it took a lot of time, it was an experience that her studnets still talk about. I would love to be able to one day have to equipment and be able to do that with my students!!!

It That Time of Year Again...

It is time to schedule again, and it is doing nothing but giving me a headache. I have all of the classes that I want to take, and know that I should, but my current advisor is telling me something completely different. What do I do?? He will not be my advisor next year, so it is hard to say how much he relaly cares to help. I want to do what is right for my education, but right now I don't know what that is. Also, he is not being helpful with my College of Ed. application, and I am just stuck!!! Can anyone help?!

Work

I am so glad to be done with my web page, and know that I did well, but now I am overloaded with some many other things!!!! I have so much work to do in all of my classes, and in addition to that I am applying to the College of Ed. I am so stressed out that I don't even know where to begin all of my stuff. My grades are good, but I can't believe how much work I have to get done! i have 4 tests this week!!!! I can't wait for this semester to be over, and I can be laying on the beach loving the water and the sun!!!

Oh My Phone!!

So just when I thought that technology was finally becoming my friend, I was wrong. As I was diong my hair in the bathroom the other day I knocked my phone off of the counter and into the toilet. I grabbed it out of the CLEAN water, and began to dry it. I used a hair drier, and it would turn on but the speaker would not work. I looked into getting a new phone, but a new one, that will probably be outdated in 3 days, would ave been $300. So, after several hours of drying it out, my phone works better than before!! I don't knwo how that works, but it doesn't shut off anymore.

Health Tests

Last weekend I had to go home, and my mum asked me to go to work with her for the afternoon. She is an aide in a behavior problem classroom at a local elementary school, and this gave me time to observe this type of classroom. Ironically, while I was there the teacher asked me to administer a health test to a student. This was such a challenge. When I asked hte studetn to start the test he said he had to go to the bathroom, so I said that when he was done with the front he could go. That was ok for a little while, but then he diecided to stand on his chair. Throughout the test he managed to take off his shoes, throw a pencil at me, and throw an eraser at me. I did not yell, but spoke to him rationally to get him to finish. Fianlly he did, and my mum told me that this was his behavior everyday because he did not get his medicine. It was so frustrating, but I guess that is what it is like in public schools.

Basketball Clinic

I have been asked by some of the members in my town to create and run a basketball clinic for girls in elementary and middle school. I want to use this to work on both their skills, plays, and teamwork. The challenge I am having though is that every year they get a new coach, so they never hav anything stable. Also, I have nothing to build off of from previous years. I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on what I can work on thorughout the clinic. This is a great group of girls, and I would really like to help them out the best I can. So, if anyone can help me, please let me know!!!

Zumba!

Last week I went to my first Zumba class with Brandi. I love it! It is an hour class, free at the arc, that uses Latin dancing and core workouts set to music. It is an amazing workout. Also, you feel so good when you leave because it is so fun!! I was scared to go at first because I thought i would ook stupid, but everyone looks silly so you fit right in. Also, there are about 90 people that go so you do not have to worry about being alone. This is a great class, and I think that everyone should give it a try!!!

The Piston Cup

In Fitness Ed. we were asked to find a warm up that would be appropriate for the elementary level to share with the class. I found one on PeCentral called The Piston Cup. It is a standar circut warm up, but it invloves the racing aspect and music that is found in the movie. I think that warm ups like this one are great for young kids becuase it relates to something that they are interested in (like the movie Cars), and because of that they will want to be more active in the gym. These activites encourage the kids to be more active, and they will want to do this more than just run a few laps around the gym. I personally love the movie, and could watch it everyday! This is hands down my favorite warm up so far!!!

Happy Valentine's Day

Ok, so it's a little late to be wishing everyone a happy Vday, but I got a new Ipod!!! It is the new Nano in the light green color. I am so excited, but of course with my luck and technology when I downloaded the new Itunes my computer frize and I had to get it fixed! HAHA! I wore out my old Ipod...the original shuffle. I got it only a few years ago and already it is out of date and broken down. I can't even turn it on. So I am pumped about my new Ipod, and can't thank my boyfriend enough for it!!!!!!

Dance Dance

I know that Dance Dance Revolution is now used in Physical Education classes, and I think that is awesome! I have one version of DDR, the Dancing With the Stars version, and it is one of the best workouts I have ever had. It not only makes you pay attention to what is going on on the screen, but it also provides you with a whole body workout. I got the game for Christmas, and already I can see changes in my physical appearence. When I play the game, I get a workout not only in my legs, but also my abs and my arms. I end up swining my arms along with the movements of my feet, and most of hte moves require you to have tight abs. I think that this is a great way to get kids involved because it gives them music to play along wiht, and most of them do not even realize they are exercising.

So I have this friend...

So I have this friend who no matter what thinks that her major is better than ours. She goes to school for medicine, and constantly turns her nose up to Phys. Ed. because she says she will save lives, and I will play kickball. What she doesn't know, are the things that we learn everyday, and the new attitude throughout Phys. Ed. to change the way we are seen. I can now tell her that we are fighting obesity, and finding new ways to help kids. This won't just help their health, but also keep them out of trouble. With activities in and out of class kids can now have a reason to stay out of trouble with things like drugs. So really what she doesn't know is that when she says she will save lives, I can turn around and say the same thing!

YMCA

Some other PE majors and I went to the YMCA in New Castle last week to help kids there learn about fitness. It was both fun and sad at the same time. We had a great time warming the kids up with a game called jog tag, and then we got together an awesome game of ultimate frisbee that we got to play too. The worst part was the attitutude fo some of the kids towards physical activity though. They were not exposed to it as much as they should be, and it was obvious that they were turned off from it. Some kids actually said that they would not participate because they were over weight. That to me was the most frustrating thing to hear since we are trying to educate ourselves to help these kids. I just hope that with a hcange in what we teach can help encourage kids to want to become more and more active.

Technology and Me

Technology hates me!!! My phone, which I do not do anything to, is constantly broken. I have had to send it back 5 times. How does that happen to someone? Currently, there is a memory card stuck in my multi-media card slot in my laptop. I can not get it out, and now have to get that repaired. I recently had to get a new digital camera too because my camera turned on one day and would not un-zoom. It would only take pictures of people's eyes. Why is it that pretty much everything electronic that I have ends up breaking when I take great care of it because I know that more often than not my things have a way of ending up broken? Hopefully my IPod will stay strong and not give out on me before the semster is over.

Mac Laptop

I know that when I posted about the coolest technology I wrote about this, but I can't help to bring it up again. I would love to have the new Mac Air Laptop. I hate to carry around my laptop sometimes because all of the things I have to carry around with it. Also, imagine hwo much easier it would be to take your laptop to class if you had one that light. I love to take my laptop with me on vacation to find all the things in the area around the beach, so this would be much eaiser for me to take too. The only thing is though...if I got this laptop something new and much smaller would probably come out the next week that I would want! (And my pens laptop cover wouldn't fit if I got a new laptop!!!)

About Me

Hi! My name is Leslie, and I am a sophomore at SRU. I am a Health and Physical Education major, and want to minor in Aquatics (I love to swim!). I have a younger brother who just started to drive...watch out if you are on the road, and a wonderful boyfriend named Justin. I am from Monroeville, and graduated from Gateway Senior High School ( Go Gators!). I coach a summer swim team near my house, and work as a lifeguard. Also, I love to shop and be active. Anything that invovles Pittsburgh, for example the Pens and Steelers, is what I love! It is great to have grown up just outside of the city!!!!!
