So I have this friend...

So I have this friend who no matter what thinks that her major is better than ours. She goes to school for medicine, and constantly turns her nose up to Phys. Ed. because she says she will save lives, and I will play kickball. What she doesn't know, are the things that we learn everyday, and the new attitude throughout Phys. Ed. to change the way we are seen. I can now tell her that we are fighting obesity, and finding new ways to help kids. This won't just help their health, but also keep them out of trouble. With activities in and out of class kids can now have a reason to stay out of trouble with things like drugs. So really what she doesn't know is that when she says she will save lives, I can turn around and say the same thing!

I completely agree! I have a friend who is a biology major at John Carroll and when she asked me what my GPA was one semester, she told me that I should be ashamed of not getting anything other than a 4.0 because our major is easy and all we have to do is play sports. People will just not understand how important our major is and the difference that we can make in other people's lives. It is very frustrating to hear people talk down on us for wanting to help people be physicall active, but we are going to hear it for the rest of our lives.

I couldn't agree more. Both of the majors involve helping people, but only in a different way. She works on helping those who may already be sick while we are helping others and working on prevention so that they may stay in good health. If you think about it, if we as teachers don't do our jobs right then the students that we have in class may end up seeing her in the future.

We as Phys. Ed. majors will probably not be able to win the battle against someone else who thinks they have harder classes. Just explain to them that you are going to enjoy what you are doing the rest of your life. That we will be educating children on their health and fitness so that they don't have to make as many visits to a doctor. I get the comments all the time about how easy our major is but really I think the standards of being a teacher and what is expected outside of our school work is something non education majors won't understand. As long as you are happy with what you are doing and how things in your life are going right now don't worry about what anyone else says.
